Forward thinking company Flannery Plant Hire have taken delivery of one of our custom made Light Livery panels designed to alert cyclists to the dangers of passing a long vehicle on the left hand side blindspot.
Owner Patrick Flannery said, ”We take the safety of both our workforce and the general public very seriously, we hope that the fitting of this panel will help stop cyclists from taking the unecessary risks associated with a long vehicle’s left hand side blind spot.”
According to a Pedal Cycling Road Safety Factsheet published by the Department of Transport in March 2018, around 92 per cent of all reported cyclist casualties and 75 per cent of fatalities involved a collision between a pedal cycle and one motor vehicle.
HGVs are disproportionately more likely to be involved in a pedal cyclist fatality. Between 2011 and 2016, collisions involving HGVs and cyclists accounted for 23 per cent of cycling fatalities despite HGVs comprising just 5 per cent of traffic in GB.
The majority of pedal cyclists killed and seriously injured (KSI) casualties (77 per cent) occur on weekdays, i.e. Monday through Friday. The weekday peak time for pedal cyclist KSIs is from 7am to 10am and from 4pm to 7pm. Collisions during these hours account for around 40 per cent of all pedal cyclist KSIs.
FHOSS CEO, Andrew Kimitri said, “We are approaching the winter months, these times will generally be in dark / low light conditions so this is where the panel can help to prevent such accidents.”
